In Spindle's defense for not diving down their to save her like Cassie, he couldn't. Seranith are not very good at swimming, they sink like rocks, they can only really doggy paddle, and they can't tread water. The situation gets worse in tight areas like the well, because even the few Seranith that can swim well can't make tight turns in the water. If Spindle dived in after her, he'd only end up pushing her father down.
